Visions In Clay
September 4 - 21, 2018
Julianne Harvey
My current work combines opposing concepts about animals: cultural perceptions and scientific knowledge. I seek to pose questions to the viewer by means of layered imagery. The meanings that humans have historically ascribed to animals, acknowledgment of their consciousness, the roles they play in our lives, and how they have all changed over time.
Symbolic, aesthetic, scientific, and historic aspects of animals create an intersection for ideas which inform the sculpture I create.
Aesop鈥檚 Fables, Nursery Rhymes, and the Disney icon, are linked both visually and psychologically. The hidden symbolism and meaning of the nursery rhyme 鈥3 Blind Mice鈥 refers to religious persecution in the 16 th century. Aesop鈥檚 Fable, 鈥淲ho will Bell the Cat,鈥 signifies the attempt to perform an impossible task and the realization of an unplanned outcome, which has particular relevance in world politics today.
