Transition for Academic Success is Key (TASK)
The transition from high school to community college can be exciting and a bit confusing for the student with a disability. There are many new procedures and rules to learn. There are also significant differences between the assistance and accommodations the student received in high school under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and the services and accommodations the student may receive at the community college under Section 504 and The ADA. As a result, 188bet备用网址 College DSPS has created a summer bridge program called Transition for Academic Success is Key (TASK) to help students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their academic pursuits at 188bet备用网址 College.
What is TASK?
Transition for Academic Success is Key (TASK) is a two-week learning community designed to assist 30听students in their transition听from high school to college. Class curriculum is developed to help students understand the differences between high school and college. Students will enroll in two courses: Learning Skills 72 (1 unit course) : Transition for Academic Success and Counseling 11 (.5 unit course): New Student Orientation. 2025听courses are scheduled to meet, Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; no Friday classes each summer.听
Why Participate in TASK?
The intensive orientation provided through TASK will help students build the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in achieving their academic goals while attending 188bet备用网址 College. Curriculum includes:
- Ways to prepare for college.
- How to access disability-related services at the college level.
- How to understand an academic accommodation plan and communicate it to an instructor.
- Specific transition considerations for students with different types of disabling conditions.
- Exploring 188bet备用网址 College's support services and academic resources.
- Becoming familiar with campus staff and resources as a cohort.
Who is Eligible?
Any high school senior with a documented disability who is planning on attending 188bet备用网址 College for the Fall semester is eligible. Acceptable documentation can be any of the following: current IEP, 504 Plan, or Psych Evaluation. Priority consideration will be given to five students from each of the following high school districts: Stockton, Lincoln, Lodi, Manteca, and Tracy. Students from other districts may be considered.
When and Where is TASK Held?
The TASK learning community takes place take place on campus. Classes meet for two weeks, Monday thru Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; no Friday classes.
